‘Elusive’ (~difficult to find, catch, achieve or remember)

The young horse is nimble, agile, independent, unbound, and carefree. But above all, it is free and in tune with nature. It can be a challenge to catch a young horse in the pasture.

“I prefer to paint my horses on canvas without any tack, without bridle, saddle, or halter. As a symbol of the freedom they need, to be themselves.”

In reality, many young horses are often misunderstood and stressed by the often abrupt transition from wild horse to riding horse.

“As a veterinarian, a young horse can sometimes be unpredictable or even dangerous, and this is mutual in the eyes of the horse. In my veterinary career I often dealt with dangerous situations for both myself as for the horse. And often this was caused by lack of time, patience or understanding.”

This painting is about freedom and patience. Give your horse the time to be young.

“From the moment a client asks: ‘Hi, Marjo, Can you come over to vaccinate the young horses in the field?’ You know you won’t be home before dinner… The agility of a young horse is hard to outwit as a horse vet and can be a real struggle. On the other hand as an artist I admire the strength they radiate and I love to catch that raw natural power on my canvas. This is one of the reasons why I love the variety of my two jobs flowing into one passion for horses.”
