Up close
I used to paint birds when I was a kid. Eight years old, painting in my grandfather’s studio. Birds, with watercolour on watercolour paper. I painted very detailed, every feather and every wrinkle in the eye.
My grandfather was always amazed by my technique. Even though he was my teacher, he always said ‘I cannot do what she does’. And I remember he made me proud by saying that. His work was more abstract. Just like my work of today.
I cannot do that anymore. I lost the patience. But I gained the feeling. It’s not about a beautiful picture of a bird anymore. It’s about the emotions while painting them.
Because they gave me wings while painting, I decided to paint more birds.
